As the Spring season arrives, the stores start to fill up with many seasonal related items. You can find all things for Easter- small plastic eggs, large plastic eggs, stickers, straws, candy, and so much more. These are all perfect for STEAM/STEM activities for children of all ages. I love holiday shopping especially at Target’s Dollar Spot, Dollar Tree and Michael’s.
So of course I went shopping and filled up our cart with lots of materials for Easter themed STEAM/STEM Activities.
Our first activity we did was to make parachutes that would safely land our plastic Easter eggs. My boys had so much fun doing this and their imagination and creativity was amazing for days on end trying to make parachutes out of different materials and what not. If you haven’t given this a try, do! It’s a lot of fun and requires just a few materials. Check it out below!
Materials
- Coffee Filters
- Twine
- Plastic Bag
- Tape and/or Tape Dots
- Mini Red Cups
- Plastic Eggs
Instructions
- Cut out a medium sized circle from the plastic bag. Caution: Keep plastic bags away from little children-suffocation hazard.
- Measure the twine for how long you will want it hanging from the bag to the mini red up. Keep in mind to add extra as you will be taping an inch to the bag and the cup. Cut 4 pieces of twine.
- With the inside of the plastic bag facing up, tape on twine on the top. Next tape another twine on the bottom. Next tape a twine string on the left side and then on the right side. All 4 pieces should be opposite from each other.
- Now bring the Top twine and the twine on the Left together at the bottom and tape to the inside of the mini red cup. Repeat with Bottom twine and the Right twine.
- Your parachute should be taking shape now!
- Grab your plaster Easter egg, draw a happy, sad, scared face on it and set it inside of the red up.

Now to test your parachute! At a safe height, with Adult Supervision, drop the egg parachute and see what happens. Try creating different parachute styles using a coffee filter, paper bag, and other materials to see what works best.
