This month’s homeschool art lesson includes trying out different methods of fluid art painting. We began our lesson with an introductory video from YouTube (link below) which went over the three different types of pours for beginners. One was a dirty pour, tree ring pour, and a clean pour.

My boys absolutely love this art project! This is basically a type of process art in that we do not know what the end result will be, so it’s just amazing overall. Have you painted with fluid art before? How did you like it?

My disclaimer is that I am not an art teacher but I do love art! Therefore, my directions on how to complete this painting is merely just for fun and based on our experiences. Also, this can be super messy… but so worth it! I tried my best to ensure we had everything we needed to keep the mess contained, but things happen, right? lol. So that’s just my fair warning to you! But I do hope you enjoy fluid art painting as much as we have!

Here’s a list of supplies to help you get started:

Fluid art paint ready to pour: https://amzn.to/3AvpEFV

Canvases: https://amzn.to/3yJdnft

Kid sized gloves: https://amzn.to/3NHv2bH

Cups: https://amzn.to/3AwOaGI

Kraft Paper Roll: https://amzn.to/3Ar6EIw

Directions for a dirty pour fluid art painting:

  1. Lay kraft roll paper on the table/floor. *Tip* Grab two bags- one for the leftover paint bottles when the project is done, and one to collect the garbage.
  2. Layout canvas, paint, cup (s), and gloves on the kraft paper. *Tip* Have extra gloves handy.
  3. Pick colors for your painting.
  4. The first color you add into the cup should be 1/3 of the cup. It has the most color in this part. (You can also just do what you choose lol)
  5. For the next color, you can tilt the cup slightly so that the paint rests on the first color, or you can just pour it in a zigzag fashion. Depending on the size of your canvas, depends on how much paint you use, but you want to be generous.
  6. If you’re using more colors, repeat step number 3.
  7. You can now pour the paint on the canvas! My son did a zigzag fashion across and down the canvas.
  8. Pick up the canvas and tilt sideways, up and down, to let the paint go all over the canvas and the sides.
  9. Voila! Let your fluid art painting dry for about 24 hours. To be honest with you, I rest the paintings on an old NuWave metal rack I have which you can check out here. If you have an actual drying rack for paintings like this one, just be sure to put paper in between so the top painting doesn’t drip on the bottom painting.
