It’s Shark Week and I have planned a week’s worth of fun and educational activities for my kids.

To kick off Shark Week, we started with something easy to make: an origami shark bookmark!

These came out so cute and it’s a great introduction into origami. You can read the instructions below and also watch my tutorial video below. When you’re done making your shark origami, be sure to tag me on social media @playinquiremakelearn so I can feature them in my stories!

Materials:

Origami 500 Sheets

Gluestick

Scissors

Googly Eyes

Construction paper

Step by Step Directions:

  1. Place the origami paper on the table in the shape of a diamond.
  2. Fold the bottom tip of the diamond to the top tip to form a triangle, and crease.
  3. Fold one corner of the triangle to the middle and crease. Repeat with the other side. This forms two mini triangles.
  4. Unfold the two corners and form a big triangle again.
  5. Taking the top tip of the triangle, fold it down to the base of the triangle.
  6. Take the right corner of the triangle and fold it like you did in step (4) but now you’re going to tuck in the tip to make a pocket. Crease. Repeat to the other side.
  7. Flip it 180 degrees. Now this is the foundation of any bookmark!
  8. Next, cut out 3 fins. I cut out two rectangular, curved fins (pectoral) and one triangular top fin (dorsal).
  9. Glue the fins onto the bookmark.
  10. Next, cut out teeth. Cut a piece of paper into a rectangle, and cut half of the paper in a jig saw pattern.
  11. Glue the teeth to the opening pocket of the bookmark.
  12. Glue on the Googly eyes.

And that’s it! Enjoy your shark bookmark and reading! Don’t forget to tag me @playinquiremakelearn with your creations!
