To go along with our books about the ocean, I set up an oobleck activity that represented the 5 layers of the ocean (I made five colors of oobleck 😅) and added in our mini figurines from @safariltd to go along with each layer 🐋 🐠 🐙 🦈 🦀. My youngest really enjoyed this theme! As he played, we talked about the names of the deep sea animals and which layer they lived in. We didn’t have a sea spider 🕷 so I put in a spider that I got from @dollar tree 😆 but hey it worked out!
Materials:
Cornstarch
Water
1 large Bin
5 bowls
Ocean themed toys
Directions:
1: To make oobleck, use 2 cups of cornstarch and 1 cup of water. Makes a perfect batch every time!
2: To make different colors, I first created one big batch.
3: In 5 separate bowls, distribute the oobleck as evenly as possible.
4: In bowl number 1, leave it white.
5: In bowl number 2, use your finger to add in a touch of blue food coloring.
6: In bowl number 3, add a little more food coloring than you did in bowl number 2. (Each layer should get darker and darker as you add in more food coloring).
7: In bowl number 4, add a little more food coloring so it is darker than bowl #2 and #3.
8: For the 5th layer, I used a bit of purple in addition to the blue for a deeper color. You can do the same. This layer just has to represent the darkest layer of the ocean since sunlight doesn’t reach the bottom.
9: Final step- It is a bit tricky but all the colors have to be poured carefully into the big bin. Start with the darkest color first, then carefully add the lighter colors. It won’t be perfect but will still be so beautiful!
