What are minibeasts? Butterflies, dragonflies, scorpions, spiders, ladybugs, and praying mantises are all considered minibeasts and today we are going to start learning about them!

My boys are definitely interested in bugs 🕷 and this was a perfect opportunity for us to learn about new topics that I haven’t introduced formally. We started first with butterflies since we recently covered the butterfly life cycle.

Since butterflies are symmetrical, this was an excellent art experiment to try. We talked about symmetry and then painted one side of our butterflies. The goal was for the paint to transfer to other side when the paper was folded in half, but it took us a few tries. The paint has to be really wet so it could transfer. At the end of our video, you can see that effort!

Next, we talked about the parts of a butterfly and labeled a worksheet so I can put it into their homeschool portfolio. We also read our usborne book “bugs”. It is rainy 🌧 weather today so we shall hunt for minibeasts later on in the week in our backyard and hopefully spot a few!

If you want to check out these worksheets that I created, you can purchased them in my blog shop. It features 6 minibeasts- butterflies, dragonflies, scorpions, spiders, ladybugs, and praying mantises.
