Have you ever made a rain cloud in a jar?
We love doing this science experiment! Usually it is done with shaving cream, but because we made soap soufflé with a bar of soap, this was the perfect “cloud” to put in a beaker and make it “rain”!
What is soap soufflé?
The best part about making this soap soufflé is it’s only one ingredient! An ivory bar of soap. Does it have to be ivory? Yes, because when this particular soap is made, air was whipped into it which also contains water molecules. When these water molecules begin to heat up in the microwave, it expands and creates a cloud like appearance. You can read more about this phenomenon on Steve Spangler’s website 😃.
So are you ready to do make soap soufflé? Follow the instructions below:
Materials for soap soufflé :
Ivory soap
Microwave safe Plate
Paper towel
Microwave
Directions:
1️⃣Cut an ivory soap bar into 4 pieces
2️⃣Put one to two pieces of soap onto a plate.
3️⃣Spread a paper towel on the rotating glass plate in the microwave. (This protects your microwave from possible overflow of soap.)
4️⃣Put the plate with the soap in the microwave.
5️⃣Microwave for about a minute. ⚠️HOT please use caution after heating up! Take out of the microwave carefully as the plate and soap are HOT. Let it cool for a bit before taking out.⚠️
Directions To make a Rain Cloud Experiment
- Fill a beaker 2/3 full with water.
- Add a chunk of the soufflé on top (it floats!)
- Add blue food coloring on the top of the “cloud”.
- Watch as the food coloring starts to diffuse into the water.
