How To Create A Space Themed Sensory Play

I created this space themed sensory tray with home made cloud dough (recipe below), black dried beans, and figurines from @SafariLtd – the Space Toob and the Solar System.

I just want to say that sensory play is for all ages! And that’s what I hope to spread through this blog. My boys are 5.5 and 7.5 and they absolutely love sensory play. Sensory play is so vital as it helps to build nerve connections in the brain, encourages fine motor skills, language development and so much more. I remember playing with play doh and molding the heart in my class when I was in my early 20’s. So, there you go! Sensory play just has so many benefits no matter your age!

Supplies:

Cloud dough recipe:

2 cups of cornstarch

1 cup of conditioner

Sensory bin:

Space toys

Multi compartment tray (we got ours from the dollar store)

black beans for rocks or pebbles from the dollar store


Directions For The Cloud Dough:

  1. Measure 2 cups of cornstarch and place carefully into a mixing bowl.
  2. Measure 1 cup of conditioner. Add a few drops of food coloring and mix into the conditioner at this point. If you are not adding in food coloring, then skip this step.
  3. Carefully pour the cup of conditioner into the bowl of cornstarch. Try not to breathe in the particles that float in the air.
  4. Mix the cornstarch, conditioner and food coloring together with a spoon.
  5. After the mixture comes together, use your hands to finish kneading.
  6. After dough is formed and can stretch and mold, it’s done and ready to play with!
    *if it too wet, add a little bit of cornstarch; if it is a little too dry, add a little bit of conditioner. I found that the ratio of 1:2 conditioner to cornstarch works really well.*

Creating the Space Sensory Bin

Using the different compartments of the tray- place the cloud dough in the center. Put the black beans or pebbles in another compartment. Organize the space toys into planets, astronauts, vehicles, etc, into different compartments. This is such a great way to explore sensory and space together and it creates hours of play and creativity.
