These wooden battle bot electronic toys are really awesome and are a great hands-on introduction for building and learning about motors and circuitry.
Instructions
The instructions came in a handheld booklet of a few pages. The illustrations are clear for the bigger pictures and a little obscure for the smaller pictures i.e. the screws. There were several screws of differing sizes so it could have been written bigger to differentiate. Also, some of the images would be flipped so you have to pay attention to the direction of the major pieces before screwing them in or making sure the smaller wood pieces fit in snuggly.
Materials
The wood pieces I thought were good quality. It was finished and I didn’t have to worry about the kids or myself getting splinters, unless of course, a wood piece breaks while forcing it into the slot (oops!). But other than that, we remained injury free which I’m really happy about. But still, be careful.
Some of the motors came with the wires soldered, and some did not. It would have been helpful for all of them to come soldered because the wires are really tiny to wrap around the motor inserts. We made it work by using a lot of electrical tape however.
Tools
The tools we used were miniature screw drivers, a wire stripper, and electrical tape. Having bins to put the screws, washers, and other small parts are also helpful.
Difficulty
This product has an age recommendation of 14 years old.
My 7 year old needed help as it wasn’t easy to line up and push in the wood pieces together. He was able to gather the pieces and help troubleshoot when the wheels wouldn’t turn or the battery pack wasn’t aligned. A great learning experience with breaks is necessary to keep engagement and motivation at a steady level.
My 9yo faired much better with following the instructions and putting his bot together with minimal help from me. He just needed my assistance with aligning and tightening the screws and little things like that.
Overall, it’s a wonderful educational product. Adult supervision and assistance is highly recommended for any age, especially if the child is a beginner with electrical wiring and robotics. Check out our video below to see these battle bots in action!
I think kids who are in to battle bots or robots can learn a lot from this and just enjoy being able to make something from scratch and have it be an actual working product is pretty awesome. It’s really one of the coolest things we built together that works and wasn’t as stressful as some other “toys” we’ve spent more hours working on and have it not work at all.
If you have any questions, or have built one of these before, let me know what you think!
