My youngest child loves animals! If he could, he would own and take care of every single animal that exists! He is such a caring and compassionate young individual and so when he told me one of his careers would be to become a veterinarian, I researched the web and found these Professional Starter Kits from Kiwi.Co. We absolutely love the Veterinarian Starter Kit!
There are two other professions that came in the starter kit: The Astronaut Starter Kit and the Paleontologist Starter Kit. We will be opening those shortly and you can check back to see what it consists of!
So when we first opened the Veterinarian Starter Kit, there were so many cool things to look at and learn from! There is a little green paper notebook with information and pamphlets, a checkup form, a stethoscope, a bandage roll, a pretend syringe, felt gauze pads, gloves, a light box X-ray machine to build, X-rays of a few animals, a mini carrying bag, and a poster. Such a great value for all of this!
The first thing my son was attracted to was the dog puzzle. Here, he learned about the muscles, the inner organs (anatomy) of a dog, as well as the function (physiology) of each organ. So amazing!
A few days later, I decided to set up a “Pet Vet Clinic”. I looked up actual diseases of some of the animals and what treatment/recommendations were necessary to treat the animals. I created a simple brochure for my kids to use as a guide for diagnosing and treating the animals. My kids LOVED this! They had so much fun! They each took a turn playing the veterinarian, wearing their lab coat and all! (SO CUTE!)
So what I would do is I take one child aside and review the 3 diseases with them. I then asked which one they would want their animal to have. So my oldest chose to have a pet snake and decided to go with dermatitis. So we cut pieces of tape, colored it green, drew red spots to represent redness and inflammation, and stuck it on to the snake.
Next, my oldest took his pet snake to the vet! He told the “veterinarian” the signs and symptoms his snake was experiencing and if the vet could help him. The “veterinarian” asked more questions, reviewed the list of diseases, and then determined it was dermatitis. He suggested injectable antibiotics around the inflamed areas and also to wrap the area to prevent more damage. It was really just the cutest thing but I also knew they were learning so much by adding in this realistic touch.
You can grab a free printout of the brochure here. Hope you enjoy it!
