We are enjoying our homeschool art lessons using Discovering Great Artists book. I love using these types of books as guides as they include a little background information on the artist as well as including a famous painting. There is also a paired activity to complete that’s similar in fashion to the technique the artist used or the painting/drawing/sculpture itself.

For today’s art lesson, we made monotypes.

What is a monotype?

A monotype is essentially an image that is painted and then transferred on to paper, resulting in a one of a kind art. So in this lesson, the kids painted an image on to a plastic tray (a cookie tray and even foil can be used) and then using paper, we pressed it onto the image and then carefully lifted it up (check out our video below).

What is the purpose of a monotype?

The purpose of a monotype is to make unique, one of a kind artwork.
